Holly Creek Baptist Church is located in the
foothills of Fort Mountain about
two miles east of Chatsworth, Georgia. The church was organized
over 150
years ago on July 21, 1848. The original building was a log
schoolhouse located about 300 yards behind the present property. Records do not
indicate how long the log schoolhouse was used for a meetinghouse for
the church.
The first building that was built by the church was of hand-dressed
lumber and was
used until 1917 when it was torn down. The church members decided
to rebuild
on the current property, and that building burned on February
3, 1946.
The next stage of building was completed in 1948 – one
hundred years after the
church was established. It was a sanctuary made of concrete
walls and floors
with an exterior covering of mountain rock. Today we call it
the “old sanctuary”.
From 1954-55, the addition of a six-room Sunday School annex
was
completed. Later, in 1960, a Pastor’s study, two Sunday
School rooms, a fellowship
hall, and a women’s restroom were added. In 1969 more
office space
was created along with three more Sunday School rooms and a
basement for
storage. Ten years later, in 1979, a new fellowship hall was
constructed and
two additional restrooms were installed. The second auditorium
was added in
1983; but it was significantly smaller than it is today. No
further changes were
made until 1992 when the current auditorium was expanded and
seven Sunday
School rooms, a choir room, and new baptistery facilities were
built. The most
current building project included the Christian Life Center
in 2003 that provided
the church with a gymnasium/fellowship hall, several classrooms
and/or
conference rooms, four restrooms, and much needed storage areas.
Praise God
for the blessings He’s bestowed upon our church!
